Haiti's 2012 Carnival logo: The Inspiration

When asked to create a symbol for the 2012 Haitian Carnival, the image of a conch shell quickly came to mind.

For us haitians, the conch shell represents freedom. During the slave revolution, the shell was used to call escaped slaves to gather while in hiding (with a powerful blow on it’s top, the conch shell produces a very deep and loud noise).

Nowadays, the carnival is probably the biggest gathering of Haiti’s population. It’s a whole state of mind. A time and place where people forget about all their problems and dance to the harmonious sounds of drums, horns, maracas, trumpets, (and the list of instrument goes on).

I felt a connection between the gathering of the slave who plotted their freedom and the gathering of the contemporary Haitian people. They are both seeking FREEDOM. Different types of freedom of course… but FREEDOM.

This led me to the conclusion that I absolutely had to use the conch shell as my inspiration for this year’s Carnival Logo.
If you look past the flat graphic, you see so much more. A country of full of culture, colors, love, and of course…Rhythms.

Here’s something truly outstanding. Commonly, a logo is a unique static mark that best represents a company, a person or a service.

Here’s a logo (or logos), for MIT laboratory that changes for every use. A unique logo that can be represented in 40,000 unique ways. An ever changing logo.

“Whatever ‘media’ means, it has been and will be defined at this place, in the next 5, 10, 20 years,” says designer Richard The. “The algorithmic logo is an effort to capture this dynamism.”

Street Art View by Google & Redbull

Here’s a really cool project created by Google and Redbull. It lets you browse street art around the world using Google’s Street View technology. I’m not sure why this idea came from Red Bull, don’t see the correlation, but hey.. thanks Redbull!

You can add locations, browse by artists, or simply browse freely.
